One of the most important elements of a sauna or bathhouse is the wooden bench system, designed for relaxation and various sauna procedures. In this article, we will explain what makes a quality sauna bench and how to choose the right material for its construction.

Design Features of Sauna and Bathhouse Benches

The main structural components of sauna benches are the supporting frame and the bench surface. The seating and lying areas are typically made from specially manufactured bench boards designed for sauna use.

In some cases, benches are equipped with removable bench tops rather than fixed surfaces. Removable sections can be periodically taken out of the steam room for ventilation and drying, helping to extend their service life. For additional comfort, sauna benches may also be fitted with backrests and ergonomic headrests.

What should sauna benches be like to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable steam room experience? First and foremost, they should provide sufficient space for an adult to sit or lie down comfortably. Sauna benches may be arranged in one, two, or three tiers and are usually installed along the walls. Adequate clearance should always be maintained between the upper bench level and the ceiling.

For smaller steam rooms, compact corner bench configurations are often used to maximize available space. Very small saunas may be equipped with folding benches to improve functionality and flexibility.

Multi-level benches typically feature a stepped design. The lower bench is usually installed at a height of approximately 40 cm (16 in.), the middle tier at 70–80 cm (28–31 in.), and the upper bench about 120 cm (47 in.) above the floor. The recommended bench width is 80–90 cm (31–35 in.), while the lower tier may be as narrow as 40 cm (16 in.). Bench lengths generally range from 150 to 180 cm (59–71 in.). These dimensions serve as general guidelines and should be adjusted according to the specific project requirements.

Choosing the Right Material for Sauna Benches

Like all sauna interior materials, bench boards should be free from defects to ensure maximum comfort and safety. The wood must also be resistant to heat and moisture, as only durable materials can withstand the demanding conditions of a steam room and provide many years of reliable service.

If you are planning to build sauna benches, consider our selection of premium thermally modified wood bench boards.
